There is a difference between a Bullfighter and a Rodeo Clown. Some people don't understand that because in earlier days of rodeo, the bullfighter did it all. He clowned, entertained and protected the cowboys.
A tough job for just one man, but with more specialized trades came the separation of the two, and today you have at least two bullfighters that do nothing but protect the cowboys. You might hear a clown say,
"I'm a backup bullfighter, I'm gonna BACK-UP waaaay over here!"
Working the barrel and providing entertainment is the rodeo clown/barrelman. The bullfighters and the clown/barrelman work closely together in most cases. The barrel is a barrier for the bullfighters when being chased by a bulls, thus the clown's barrel is a valuable tool in an open arena, for the bullfighters and the clown.
Most people do not know about all the moves it takes to be a cowboy protector, but 100% know if the clown is funny or not, and if they have been entertained. Ask one of the families sitting out in the stands what they enjoyed most about the rodeo, different people may name several events, but they all want to see the clown.
